On an impulse and a recommendation, I drove to Rebecca's Greenhouse on Pistol River Road. What a delightful place. Take a peak at these photos.
Rebecca A. Gardner, the owner, lives in a beautiful home adjacent to her nursery with a coastal view to die for. And yes, that really is her name.
When Rebecca moved there, the property was thickly covered with invasive plants; but with persistence she and her husband managed to clear them and regain usable land. Her soil is conditioned coffee grounds, manure, etc. Worms love coffee grounds and will find them anywhere. Worms are the greatest little creatures. They eat constantly and leave all these great little holes in the soil that helps to aerate the soil. Then they leave behind what they have processed. A great soil conditioner.
She shared a little secret with me. She gets her coffee grounds from local merchants who are glad to get rid of them and she is more than happy to take them off their hands. Now I am inspired, free compost, hmmm...
When the land was ready, they fenced off a portion of the property to use for their nursery. (She said her husband fenced off a smaller area than she would have liked because he is the one that has to do the watering.) [Chuckle] Soon the greenhouse was up, stocked, and she opened for business. She has been in business now for three years.
My casual jaunt turned into an inspiring afternoon.
Rebecca gave me the grand tour. She grows fruits, vegetables, flowers, and exotics. What a great way to live!
Guess where I went next? I drove to Brookings to talk to business owners about coffee grounds. A restaurant in town was happy to donate. I did promise that there would be a few tomato plants to look forward to. To my surprise, the owner is always looking for locally grown tomatoes and would be happy to buy them from me when they ripen. WOW!
One thing does lead to another, and I experienced a wonderful day.
Enjoy each day!

Hi Linda...
Thanks for the tip about coffee grounds. I think we will start doing this!
Good post.
